Check out the Pre KFC recipe that some say was stolen from Miss Childress which used many fresh items NOT all canned spices Miss Childress was Known for her chicken and use of FRESH spices and herbs from garden she used primary Beef Tallow and Peanut Oil to cook her chicken
1940 Southern Chicken Fry
• 2 small frying chickens
Mix Buttermilk Garlic Onion and Nutmeg marinade over night
• 2 tablespoons chopped garlic
• 2 tablespoons minced onion
• 1 teaspoon grated nutmeg
• 4 cups buttermilk or Can Evaporated Milk with Lemon Juice
• 3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
• Fat, Lard or peanut oil, for frying
Herb and Spice Mix:
• 1 teaspoon Salt
• 1 teaspoon freshly Ground black pepper
• 1 teaspoon Red Pepper ground to powder
• 1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
• 1 teaspoon freshly ground cumin
• 1/2 teaspoon ground mace
• 1 teaspoon paprika
• 1 teaspoon ground ginger
• 2 teaspoons crumbled dried basil
• 2 teaspoons bay leaves ground to a powder
• 2 teaspoons crumbled dried oregano
• 2 teaspoons crumbled dried sage
• 1 teaspoon crumbled dried Summer Savory Leaves
• 2 teaspoons crumbled dried thyme

I believe this is from an 1920's advert for Snowdrift shortening - tin on table. Women's name in advert is Mrs Sarah Clark, possibly a model.

Yes, that has been established on the internet. The story may be in fact true, but who ever started the claim via the internet had no other proof or photos of Childress and this is what they used because it fit the narrative.
