(Warning: Long Post. Placed here because it relates to forum function and not directly to the O.R. although an extension of other discussions, it ought to a separate discussion.)
Everyone has a right to wallow in their own B.S., but if someone wants me to wallow in it with them, then they need to convince me its worth my time, energy, effort, and interest.
In recent times we have seen Cancel Culture and Political Vengeance writ large on the world stage. At its core is a fundamental lack of Respect, Critical Thinking, and Curtesy in Common Discourse. This forum too, has had its own ups and downs, and this is why my feathers were ruffled, as things came to pass, in the, 2020 KFC11 Chicken Coup.
__________
We all have our own ideas about CHS’ O.R. Chicken recipe. We come to forums like this to search out answers to the questions that are bothering us and seem to be stumbling blocks in our own research and development. long the way we may find fellowship, friendship, a modicum of respect for our points of view as well as respect for the considered views of fellow researchers.
RESPECT is perhaps the first and core point here. One cannot command respect. It must be offered freely to others, who freely offer it in return. However, respect is a fragile thing. It is hinged on principles of TRUST, and HONESTY. These principles, in a forum dedicated to solving problems and achieving an agreed mutual goal, in this case discovering the Real O.R. as created by CHS, are regularly tested. Trust and Honesty between O.R. researchers is the bond that binds us.
At a time when CHS started building a fledgling empire of Franchises for his O.R. Chicken, “…a man’s WORD was his BOND, and a man was only as good as his word.” A firm handshake, and an unwavering, confident look in the eye, was all it took to seal the deal with Colonel Sanders.
At the same time though there were charlatans getting around, suckering people for a fast buck. America is famous for its, “Snake Oil” sellers. These people in most case failed in the long run because they forgot a fundamental tenet, “.. while you may be able to fool some of the people some of the time, you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.”
I believe the KFC11 Forum is open to anyone who is interested in discovering the Colonel Sanders’ original Recipe, as long as they read, understand, and abide by the Group’s rules. However, rules by themselves are no guarantee that sharks won’t swim in these waters, nor that Limpets won’t attach and thus lend a seemingly respectable semblance to some new, “School of Thought.”
After all, everyone does have a right to wallow in their own B.S., and have others join them. Yet, B.S., like any opinion, or proposition, point of view, or hypothesis, can and SHOULD be tested. Where it fails then it SHOULD be called out for that failure. Respect for one’s viewpoint is predicated on Trust and Honesty.
How does one build Trust? By being Honest. By being as good as one’s word. If someone asks for clarification of a statement, give that clarification, go the extra step and quote the source, or document it pictorially, and share that information. One can logically argue a position without fault or error, BUT if that argument is based on a fallacy, the argument, no matter how eloquent it may have been put, is still a fallacy. i.e. It does not follow… Non sequitur..
Honesty also involves a certain way of interaction with others. To gain respect one must first give respect. Thus we have two types of respect at play. Respect for one as a person that is honest and trustworthy, and respect for one’s thoughts and ideas as they relate to the ongoing search for the O.R. How does one show such respect to another as a person, as a fellow researcher, and member of this forum? By being FIRM, FRIENDLY, FAIR, and FRANK in what, and how, we communicate.
An online forum, like this one is a TEXT based forum. This means that our communications are fundamentally written text, with some minor (but important) illustration. This is an international forum, where English is the principle language of communication, however it may not be the native language of all members of the forum. Even where it is, language skills of native English speakers vary wildly based on education, employment and social opportunities, and local peer group exposure.
This means then that our text based communication needs to be FIRM, that is: clear, concise, and accessible to the majority of forum members, without drifting around like alphabet noodles in cloudy soup.
Part of being clear is to ensure that the words we use are spelled correctly, e.g. “anise,” and, “asine,” do not mean the same thing in any way shape for form, regardless of whether they stand alone or next to some, “star.” Suffice to say that it would not be FAIR to expect forum members to constantly correct one’s spelling mistakes in order to understand the point being made.
Ad Hominem attacks are statements made that make direct claims about a person’s character, intelligence, education, social/political/racial/etc. orientation rather than directly responding to a particular argument in dispute. This is known as, “Playing the Man, and not the Ball.” To be FRIENDLY, one plays the ball, addresses one’s comments to the point in dispute and does not make disparaging statements, or personal attacks, on the character of the person putting the argument.
One’s Honesty will be tested in forums like this. However, Honesty is also critical to being FRANK. This means to speak plainly, and without guile about whether you agree or disagree with a point of view. a) “I’m sorry, but I don’t believe that CHS did…” or, b) “CHS did what?!? Utter freaking B.S!”
BOTH statements are FRANK, however, statement B is far from FRIENDLY. Being Frank also means writing plainly, simply, and directly, rather than beating around the bush in some wishy-washy, time-wimey-wasting manner.
Text is the medium in which we communicate with each other. Being Firm, Friendly, Fair, and Frank is how we show respect to each other as a person and fellow researcher. Being Honest in our communications builds Trust and Respect for our own work as a researcher. When one consistently presents in such a manner, one might be considered, a person of Integrity.
These are the principles I believe in.
(Belief does not guarantee 110% adherence…)
