Summer Savory is strictly seasonal, and Winter Savory is a perennial. I have an odd suspicion that "potentially" much available ground Savory is of the winter type, especially if the container only states: contains Savory.
All of the KFC buzz seems to revolve around exclusively Summer Savory, but can Winter Savory be used as a successful 1:1 substitute?

I don’t know. Here is another thread wth a few tidbits: kfc11.proboards.com/post/1133/thread(Edit: - Just realized that thread is in the same folder - sorry to state the obvious) I was under the impression that summer savory was a Canada crop, and used more heavily in some of the Canadian recipes, and that at some point MK had indicated they used summer savory.

Winter Savory is said to be pronouncedly more potent and somewhat more biting or bitter, albeit with the same general flavor profile, and many recommend that when using it in the place of Summer Savory you should add only roughly half the amount. Both plants are classified to be of the same kingdom, order, clades, family, and genus. Summer Savory does not survive through the winter, whereas Winter Savory does. Therefore Summer Savory must be planted anew each spring.
It seems obvious that the Summer variety is to be preferred. Therefore it seems obvious that the marketers would want to emphasize 'Summer' if that is indeed what they are marketing. But many (to most?) retail products only state 'Savory'.

I've not seen Winter savory. My Summer savory did not grow well here in Oklahoma, which has a similar growing environment as Kentucky.
